Beauty At Every Age- Makeup Up Tips for Women as We Age
There are so many beauty trends exploding right now on Tik Tok, YouTube and Instagram. Our advice? Leave those trends to the pros and teens and focus more on perfecting a few tried and true application techniques for how to put your best face forward. Here are a few of our top tips for how to cheat Father Time and get the most out of your makeup bag.
Start With Your Skin
This goes without saying but the healthier your skin the better your makeup will look. If you don’t currently have a skin care regimen that you love or if yours is falling short- let one of our experts help develop one specific to your needs and skin care concerns.
Over moisturize your skin and use a hydrating primer for best results. The more hydrated your skin is the more full and plump it will appear. Fine lines won’t be as pronounced if skin is well hydrated and moisturized. Make sure to also moisturize under your eyes with your eye cream so that your concealer goes on more smoothly and doesn’t cake.
When applying these products always follow the “less is more” rule. Start with a small amount as you can always layer in additional product if needed. Apply your foundation first and then follow with concealer. Concealer is a more heavily pigmented product so applying it first can lead to over application and a heavier/cakey look. By applying foundation first you can then go in with your concealer on top to make sure you are only using it where you really need it.
As we age, the tendency is for everything to migrate downward. The bottom half of the face tends to start to droop. To counteract this effect, apply your bronzer and blush slightly higher on your face to give a more lifted appearance. When applying blush, make sure to start at the apples of your cheeks and blend up and out towards your temples. When applying your bronzer, apply it just under your blush and create an outward “C” towards your temples and blend up.
Embrace Highlighter When applied correctly, highlighter will help give your complexion a youthful glow, visibly lift your face and will help to emphasize your best features. Think about it as a spotlight that you can use to draw attention to the features you want to focus on and take attention away from the other areas you’d rather ignore such as crow’s feet..ect. Our tip? Smile when you apply your highlighter. This will show you exactly where your fine lines and crow’s feet are more pronounced so that you know where to avoid placing your highlighter during application. Focus more on the high cheekbone area – avoiding your crow’s feet and fine lines. Start towards your nose and blend up into the soft part of your cheek towards your hairline.
Brows Often times our brows are overlooked during makeup application when in fact, they are one of our best features to play-up in order to give a more youthful appearance You can create the illusion of fuller brows by filling in brows with a thin brow pencil to mimic the look of fullness. Use a brow gel on top and comb the brows upwards to achieve fuller looking and more youthful brows.
All About the Eyes
Much like the the rest of the face, our eyelids have a tendency to droop as we age, creating a more hooded effect. When applying eye shadow you can “cheat” the eyes up by taking a good neutral matte shade up and slightly above your crease- moving towards the brow bone. This will help to give the appearance of a more lifted look. Don’t be afraid to add a touch of shimmer. A shimmer shadow can help brighten and widen the eyes. We recommend applying shimmer eyeshadows just at the lash line and blending up into the lid. When using eye liner we recommend switching out your black liner for a softer and more diffused look. Avoid a harsh line and be sure to blend your liner or smudge into the lash line to give a softer and more natural, diffused look.
Don’t forget your lashes! Unfortunately, our lashes tend to become shorter and more brittle as we age. To help achieve longer lashes you can invest in an effective lash growth serum such as the Obagi Nu Cil serum. For best results, apply a thin line directly to the top lash line every night. When you have reached your desired length you can switch to applying every other night. Mascara matters. If using a lash growth serum isn’t your thing, make sure you are using a mascara that adds both volume and length. Make sure to change out your mascara every 3-6 months to avoid clumps and bacteria. Don’t forget to curl your lashes. When creating a youthful eye you want to make sure your lashes curl upward to brighten the eye and create a wider more awake look.
